Process & duration

How long does the midwife search take?

Before we start, we briefly need your approval: whether you've already contacted midwives yourself, and whether your details are complete. As soon as you approve, we start as quickly as possible — on working days, the first enquiries go out straight away. After that, we contact further midwives and follow up. Most pregnant women get their first replies within 2 to 7 days. And we stay on it: your active search keeps running until you end it yourself — at the latest until your due date.

Which regions in Germany do you cover?

All of them — our midwife search is available nationwide. Our search system uses the public midwife listings and contacts the active midwives within the radius of your postcode.

When should I start looking for a midwife?

Ideally right after your pregnancy is confirmed, so from around week 6–12. The earlier you start, the better your chances. But we'll still start your search even in late pregnancy — as long as there's a chance, we take it.

What if I don't yet know my exact due date?

No problem: just enter your week of pregnancy — it's usually already on your pregnancy test — and our due-date calculator works out your estimated due date. If it later turns out to be off by a few days, that's not decisive for the search. As soon as you've found your midwife, you simply tell her the updated date directly.

Do you contact all midwives at once?

No — deliberately not. We contact the midwives near you in waves: step by step rather than all at once, and we follow up with each one. That way every enquiry stays personal — and midwives are most likely to answer exactly that kind of enquiry. There's also this: in the end, you need exactly one midwife. If many said yes at the same time, we'd have to turn the rest down again — with waves, that hardly happens. Nothing changes for you: we contact further midwives for you without you having to do anything — and you see the replies live in your dashboard.

Can I request a specific midwife?

Yes. In your search request, you can tell us names or practices under "special requests". We take that into account, but still contact several midwives in parallel — so that you're guaranteed to end up with care in place. The choice is always yours.

What if I've already contacted midwives myself?

No problem — quite the opposite: before we start, you simply mark the midwives you've already contacted yourself. We exclude them from the search, avoiding duplicate enquiries. By the way: for your own enquiries, our midwife knowledge section has a template you can use.

What happens if several midwives are available?

Then you have the choice: feel free to arrange several get-to-know appointments, gather impressions, and decide in your own time. As soon as you've found your midwife, you end the search with one click.

When does your service end — and do you keep supporting me afterwards?

Our job is done once you've found your midwife and ended the search in your dashboard. From then on, everything runs directly between you and your midwife — just as it should.

What if I need a midwife at very short notice?

We start straight away. To be honest, chances are smaller with little lead time — but cancellations and changed plans keep freeing up places, and you see replies live in your dashboard.

What if I move house?

Every search applies to one location, because we contact the midwives within the radius of your address. So after moving to a different area, a new search is needed.

I've found my midwife — how do I end the search?

With one click on "Midwife found" in your dashboard. Open enquiries are ended automatically, and we let the remaining midwives know in a friendly way — you don't have to do that yourself either.

Cost & guarantee

What does the midwife search cost at hebammen.agency?

The search costs a one-off 39,95 €. That covers everything: the personal enquiry to the midwives near you, including follow-ups, and the dashboard with live status and appointment overview. There are no further costs and no hidden fees.

What happens if you can't find a midwife for me?

If no midwife with capacity for your care gets back to us during our active search, we'll refund you the full amount. That's our money-back guarantee: you apply for it directly in your dashboard, and the details are in our terms and conditions.

Can I give the midwife search as a gift, too?

Yes. The gift voucher is available for 39,95 € — the voucher code arrives by email and can be redeemed at any time within 12 months.

Does my health insurance fund cover the cost of the search?

The midwife care itself is a covered benefit. You can submit the cost of our search to your health insurance fund — whether it's covered depends on the individual fund. We provide you with the relevant receipt.

Midwives & availability

Are these real, registered midwives?

Yes. We only contact midwives who are listed in the official directories of the health insurance funds or the midwife associations. No unlicensed private providers.

What's the difference to other providers and portals?

Directories and listings only show you who exists — enquiring, following up and coordinating stays with you. Availability portals only show capacity for midwives who've registered there — you can't reach many that way at all, and because an extra profile is hard to keep up in a busy midwife's day-to-day life, the information is often out of date; on top of that, you can only contact a handful at a time and then wait, with no one following up for you. Local referral services often work with phone hours and waiting lists. We turn it around: we actively contact the midwives near you on your behalf, follow up for you and evaluate the replies for you — you see everything live in your dashboard.

How do you deal with the midwife shortage in Germany?

With respect and structure: midwives get an enquiry from us with all the relevant details at a glance and can reply with one click — a decline counts as a valid answer for us too. Our service is completely free for midwives, and anyone who doesn't want enquiries is permanently taken off our contact list.

What if a midwife says yes and then doesn't get back to me?

Then we keep searching for you — your search only ends when you end it.To be honest: midwives are self-employed and don't work for us. We contact them on your behalf and pass on every reply to you, but we can neither guarantee availability nor vouch for a commitment being kept. If a midwife suggests an appointment and doesn't show up, that's her decision — we have no influence over it.What we can do, we do: we follow up, contact further midwives, and you see every step in your dashboard. Let us know via the dashboard, and we'll take the midwife out of your search. And so that this doesn't put you at a disadvantage: a commitment that wasn't kept doesn't count against your money-back guarantee. To confirm this, we ask the midwife and need her confirmation that the appointment didn't take place.

Do I even need a midwife?

Every pregnant woman in Germany has a legal right to midwife care — before, during and after the birth. The cost of care is covered by the health insurance fund.During pregnancy, a midwife carries out antenatal check-ups alternating with the gynaecology practice, advises on complaints such as nausea or back pain, prepares you for the birth, and is your first point of contact whenever you're unsure. After the birth, she comes to you at home: she checks your postnatal recovery and wound healing, weighs the baby, cares for the umbilical cord, helps with breastfeeding, and keeps an eye on jaundice or weight development. Exactly in the weeks when no one else regularly checks in on you. That's why we recommend searching early: postnatal care is the part women miss most afterwards, if they haven't found a midwife.

Does this also work without German health insurance?

Yes, we start the search for you in that case too — with one important limitation that we're upfront about.Midwife services are covered by law in Germany, and midwives normally bill the health insurance fund directly. Without German health insurance, that route falls away: you'd have to pay the midwife privately and then submit the invoice to your own insurer yourself — whether and how much they reimburse is something you'd clarify with them.We point this out in the enquiry from the very start, so no midwife is caught by surprise later. To be honest: some are therefore more likely to decline. It's best to clarify the cost question with your insurer in advance — that makes your enquiry noticeably stronger. As always, you'll see every reply transparently in your dashboard.

Why is it so hard to find a midwife?

In many areas, demand is significantly higher than supply: midwives often book up their capacity months in advance, work part-time, or only cover a small area. Pregnant women therefore send out dozens of enquiries and still mostly get declines — or no reply at all. The public midwife listings only show who exists, not who has capacity. That's why what matters most is enquiring systematically and following up consistently. That's exactly the effort we take off your hands. And if you'd like to enquire yourself first: our midwife knowledge section has a template you can use.

Data & security

What happens to my data?

Your data is used exclusively for your midwife search. Information about your pregnancy counts as specially protected health data — it may only be processed with your explicit consent, which is exactly what we obtain on your behalf. The midwives we contact only receive what they need for their reply: name, address, due date and type of insurance. Only the midwife with whom you've confirmed an appointment receives your phone number and email address. Everything is hosted in Germany and deleted at any time on request.

Is my data secure — and what does the midwife get to see?

Yes. Your details are health data within the meaning of GDPR (Art. 9) and are only processed with your explicit consent. The midwives we contact receive exactly what they need to make a decision: name, place of residence, contact details, due date, insurance, and your requests — nothing else, and no one else. Hosting takes place in Germany, and you can request deletion at any time.
