What does the midwife search cost?

A nice idea: midwives indicate there themselves whether they currently have capacity. The catch is that it only applies to midwives who've registered there — many you simply can't reach that way. And because an extra profile is hard to keep up in a busy midwife's day-to-day life, the information is often out of date. You're allowed to enquire with a handful at a time — then it's a matter of waiting. If there's no reply or a decline, you start again from scratch. No one follows up for you, no one keeps your search going.

Dedicated points of contact, often run by local authorities or on a voluntary basis. But: phone hours, waiting lists and limited capacity make them slow — your search runs at their pace there, not yours.
